A UPDF soldier who went on a shooting spree killing and injuring several of his colleagues has been put out of action.
According to the UPDF Mountain Division spokesperson, Maj Bilal Katamba, on Sunday evening, Pte Isaac Lukwang attached to the 5th Mountain Battalion in Kasese district randomly started shooting and in the process, injured a fellow soldier, Pte Joel Alebu.
“The soldier disappeared and the hunt for him begun. In the morning of Monday at around 4:00am, he appeared at a UPDF boarder detach at Kamukumbi, where he shot, killed and grabbed a sentry’s gun by the names of Pte Solomon Kule ,” Maj Katamba said.
This prompted a manhunt for the soldier and a UPDF squad was dispatched for this job.
“The hunt for the rampaging soldier was intensified, and this(Tuesday) evening, the soldier was put out of action by a UPDF squad dispatched to disarm him when he shot back at them,” he said.
The UPDF Mountain Division spokesperson said two guns were recovered from Pte Lukwang , adding that a board of inquiry will be instituted to investigate the incident.
“We commiserate with the family of the soldier who was killed while on official duty and wish the injured a quick recovery.”
The development comes barely a week after Pte Herbertson Birivumbika, a UPDF soldier attached to SFC was sentenced to death for killing a family of five and injuring four others in Mayuge.
Pte Birivumbika pleaded guilty to the charges before the SFC court martial that sat in Mayuge.
