The 23rd Ordinary Summit of the EAC Heads of State has officially admitted Somalia to the East African Community.
Somalia was on Friday admitted to the East African Community as the eighth member in accordance with Article 3 of the Treaty for the Establishment of the EAC.
“The Somali people are honored to be part of the EAC! This is a beacon of hope for us. Hope for a future of opportunities and prosperity for Somalia, through regional integration,” Somali President Hassan Mohamud said during the meeting in Arusha, Tanzania.
During the same summit, South Sudan President Salva Kiira assumed chairmanship of the East African Community whereas Democratic Republic of Congo becomes the new rapporteur.
