Kiteezi Samaritan, affiliated to Samaritan International, an NGO that supports people working in dumping sites has donated relief food items to over 700 victims of Kiteezi landfill tragedy.
According to David Kafambe, the Samaritan International Country Director, by distributing food items and other essential supplies, they ought to stand with people who lost their jobs and daily sustenance due to the landslide.
He said the relief is designed to provide for their basic needs for at least a month as they continue to develop longer-term strategies to support their recovery and well-being.
“We recognize the immediate need for food and basic necessities among the workers who
have lost everything,” Kafambe said.
“These 700 individuals have been carefully assessed and identified as the most in need at this time. We are committed to continuing our support in the medium and long term, focusing on their recovery and helping them rebuild their lives.”
He said the organisation continues to give assistance to people working in Kiteezi.
“International Samaritan is dedicated to the holistic improvement of life for the people who
work at the dump site, and we believe that through faith, education, and community support,
we can help these families rebuild their lives.”
“Our goal is to provide education scholarships to at least 20% of the children in the communities around the dumpsite, helping them break free from the cycle of poverty. So far, we have enrolled 75 students in our scholarship program, and 75 families are already benefiting from our comprehensive livelihood programs.”
He said the landslide at Kiteezi is a stark reminder of the challenges faced by communities living and working around dumpsites.
Kasangati RDC Frank Kyazze hailed the NGO for coming to help of the victims of the tragedy.
