President Museveni has launched the update exercise for the register for the ruling NRM party ahead of the 2026 general election.
This was at the NRM party headquarters on Kyadondo road, Nakasero in Kampala.
He told the party leaders that this marks the mobilisation exercise for the next elections but noted this requires cadres well versed with the party principles.
“Mobilization in form of holding meetings and rallies is good but all those efforts will be very easy if you go back to the NRM principles and understand them. These principles are a diagnosis of the problems of Uganda and then a prescription. Therefore, as you mobilise, understand these principles yourself,” Museveni said.
“You as leaders must be different from the followers. Followers dont need to understand depth of matters but only a summary. You must go deep and it is why it is crucial to understand the four principles of NRM. Each one has got very serious issues behind it.”
He warned against fraud during the exercise where party registrars might be tempted to include names of non-existent supporters.
Museveni said these risk being jailed seven years for the offence of fraud.
The NRM Secretary General, Richard Todwong said in the initial stages, the party register has been leaned from 17 million supporters to 11.4 million.
He noted that many of those removed didn’t have proper details like national identification numbers and phone numbers whereas others had only one name.
Todwong however warned the party leaders against indiscipline and going against the party decisions.
