Police in Kampala have arrested four of their own for masterminding the kidnap and subsequent robbery of $30,000( approximately shs114million) from a Kenyan businessman who was staying at a hotel in Buziga.
In an incident that happened on January, 17, 2024, four police officers from Kabalagala Police station kidnapped Muhammad Olad Abdirahman a Kenyan businessman who was staying at Royal View Hotel in Buziga.
“Muhammad wanted to exchange $30,000 into Ugandan shillings and tried to engage the hotel manager together with another Okello to get him the best exchange rate for the dollar. The duo however tipped Police Constable Among who also alerted her colleagues at Kabalagala Police station,” police spokesperson, Fred Enanga.
On reaching the hotel, one of the police officers pretended to be a forex broker and they caused the arrest of the businessman before forcefully bundling him into a waiting vehicle and later drove him through the Kabalagala police barracks road up to another hotel garden where the $30,000 was robbed from him.
He was later set free.
Following the incident, the Kenyan businessman was helped to report the matter to authorities leading to the arrest of the four police officers including Detective Constable Among Phiona, Detectvie Constable Angula Isaac, Detective Constable Baluku Shafik and Detective Constable Galenda Bernard, all attached to Kabalagala Police Division.
“They were arrested and a quick search at their homes led to recovery of some of the dollars.All the four have been arraigned in the disciplinary court for discreditable conduct which carries a punishment of dismissal from police . They will later be arraigned in courts of law over aggravated robbery,” Enanga said.
He said the hotel manager and Okello are currently on the run and the hunt for him is on.
