Dokolo Woman MP, Cecilia Ogwal who died on Thursday morning at the age of 77 has been described as a role model politician.
Speaker, Anita Among described Ogwal as a distinguished legislator with a strong national outlook, a remarkable public figure, and inspirational advocate for a just and fair society that works for everyone.
“Hon. Cecilia Ogwal had a long distinguished public service career dating back to about 1979 when she was involved in foreign service and thereafter she served in various capacities in numerous public enterprises notably; the Advisory Board on Trade, Housing Finance Bank and Uganda Development Bank. She was an accomplished accountant whose knowledge of finances grossly informed her legislative input in various laws and budgetary processes,” Among said.
Deputy speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa said Ogwal was instrumental in guiding and shaping local leaders, as well as advocating for a just global agenda.
He said Ogwal left at a time when the country wanted her most.
For Private Sector Foundation Uganda’s Vice Chairperson, Sarah Kagingo, Cecilia Ogwal was a respectable and role model politician.
“I had immense respect for Imat Cecilia Ogwal. had the opportunity to support communication for Uganda’s bid for chairperson of the African Union Commission and the rare opportunity to closely work with Maama Ogwal,” Kagingo said.
“As President Museveni’s special envoy, she traversed Africa engaging Heads of State to vote Uganda. She set internal Ugandan politics aside and spoke greatly about her country. Quite the Iron Lady, she rooted for Uganda at several conferences around the world. I salute her for that.”
Former Prime Minister, Dr.Ruhakana Rugunda described Ogwal as an icon.
“I have heard the very sad news of the passing on of a political icon in post-independence Uganda, Hon Cecilia Ogwal. Cecilia was a consistent leader who firmly spoke her mind about issues she believed in,” Rugunda said.
Many others described her as an encyclopedia on parliamentary affairs and that she inspired many others to join parliament.
Security Minister, Maj Gen Jim Muhwezi hailed the deceased for having an unwavering dedication “fierce spirit, and tireless advocacy for justice inspired countless people.”
