The Ministry of Internal Affairs has said that 22 Ugandans are currently held under captivity in Myanmar formerly known as Burma.
According to Basalirwa Kigenyi, the deputy national coordinator for trafficking in persons in the Ministry of Internal Affairs said the 22 include 17 males and five females.
“They were trafficked out of Uganda for work in Thailand under the guise of work but were later moved to Myanmar,” Kigenyi said.
According to Kigrnyi, the 22 were recruited by Ugandans living back home and others living in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates and others living in Thailand.
He said government suspects that some of these Ugandans are working as labourers in the country’s ongoing civil war following Myanmar’s long-running insurgencies which escalated significantly in response to the 2021 military coup d’état and the subsequent violent crackdown on anti-coup protests.
“By listing their names, we hope we can bring the perpetuators to book but at the same time help in their rescue.”
