A dozen people are murdered in Uganda on a daily, the latest Police annual crime report has indicated.
Released on Wednesday at the Police headquarters in Naguru, the report indicated that a total of 4,411 persons were victims of murder in 2024 and of those, 3,494 were male adults, 594 female adults, 209 were male juveniles while 114 were female juveniles.
The report also indicates that 4,329 cases of murder were reported to police by the end of 2024, compared to 4,248 cases reported in 2023, giving a 1.9% increase in Homicide cases registered countrywide.
The 4,329 cases reported in 2024 were 1.9% of all the cases reported to police in the year.
The police report indicates that by the end of 2024, out of the total murder cases reported to Police 1,274 were taken to court, 333 cases were not proceeded with while 2,722 cases are still under inquiry.
Categories of murder
The report indicates that in the last four years, murders through assault have kept on leading with 1,095 cases registered in 2021, 1,085 cases in 2022, 1,127 cases in 2023 and 1,339 cases in 2024, followed by murder by mob action with 759 cases registered in 2021, 953 cases in 2022, 1052 cases registered in 2023 and 1016 cases registered in 2024.
The police says that generally, there was a 2% increase in murders reported countrywide, a statistic they attribute to a 19% increase in murder through assault, a 15% increase in murders by strangulation, 18% increase in murder by hacking and a 2% increase in murder by stabbing.
Rwizi Region registered the highest number of murder cases in 2024 at 356 cases, followed by Albertine with 323, North Kyoga with 263 cases and Rwenzori West Region with 252 cases .
On the other side,Rwenzori East Region registered the lowest number of murders at 40 cases, followed by Sipi with 43 cases, Bukedi North with 49 cases and Kidepo with 50 cases.
In terms of districts, Ntungamo registered the highest number of murders cases in 2024 with 91 cases, followed by Luwero Police station with 86 cases, Mukono with 80 cases, Katwe Police station with 67 cases and Isingiro with 63 cases among others .
