It was an unusual Valentine’s Day for 12 couples as the National Identification and Registration Authority(NIRA) which recently took over the mandate of registering marriages oversaw three couples tie the knot.
The function was held at NIRA headquarters in Kololo.
“I have to say, really it was as simple as we wanted it to be.We obviously wanted a bit more with the families but mine couldn’t come with me. However, since what we wanted was to be happy and just have this special day , we opted for this kind of marriage,” said, an American citizen who got married to Agide Musiina.
According to the NIRA Executive Director, Rosemary Kisembo this was an opportunity for NIRA to celebrate Valentine’s Day with these couples.

She however emphasized the need for registration of marriages.
“Often times, around marriage, there is a lot of celebration , funfare , custom and many other expensive things and yet the most important aspect of registering the marriage is forgotten,” Kisembo said.
“The cost of registration of a marriage is only shs35000. I want to take this opportunity on this day of love to ask you to ask your spouse or your church or mosque whether your marriage is registered. You risk having your spouse taken and marries another person. It might take the 20 years you have invested in each other’s lives a great deal. “
